African American Cultural and Resource Center Renovation
Challenge
The African American Cultural and Resource Center (AACRC) opened its doors on UC’s campus in 1991. The building that housed the center was only intended to serve as a temporary home, with more permanent provisions to follow. The AACRC has remained in the same building ever since. Following in the footsteps of the African American students who petitioned for the creation of the center, current students and AACRC staff urged university leaders to provide upgrades to the space.
Response
Words chosen for their significance by representatives from the AACRC appear in throughout the space, with a select group rendered in superscale. A cohesive color scheme for the graphics package corresponds with the interior design finishes. Word clouds bring texture and introduce another level of scale to the system. Graphics also include a plaque sharing the meaning of an African symbol that was incorporated into tile flooring. Changeable panels connect the provided words with photos of current members living out the AACRC mission.
